SanDisk began 19nm production in Q4 2011

X-bit Labs reports SanDisk initiated production of 19nm flash memory in Q4 2011:
SanDisk, a leading supplier of NAND flash-based products, said that it had begun production of NAND flash memory using 19nm process technology, as planned, back in Q4. The company actually pins a lot of hopes onto the new type of flash memory and asserts that it will bring better performance, lower cost and even other.

"We began production of 19nm technology in Q4, and it will ramp throughout 2012. As we explained previously, NAND scaling is becoming more complex for the industry, resulting in a lower rate of cost reduction from technology transition. The 19nm technology will generate a lower cost reduction rate compared to what we achieved with the 24nm transition," said Sanjay Mehrotra, chief executive officer of SanDisk, during a conversation with financial analysts.

WD: Return to pre-flood production level by September

Western Digital announced it expects to restore its production output to pre-flood levels by September:
Western Digital expects to rebuild its production capacities to pre-flood levels by September, 2012, the company said this week. The manufacturer aims to repair its two factories in Thailand and bring back its output to normal levels in several months from now. Until then, shortages of hard drives will likely persist.

"Our focus today is on bringing back our capacity to rapidly support our customers," said John Coyne, chief executive officer of WD, adding the impact of the floods had reduced its output by 30%, according to Reuters news-agency.

NVIDIA to start 28nm mobile production in December

FUD Zilla claims NVIDIA's first 28nm mobile GPUs will hit production in December, but the site also heard that 28nm yields are not good.
The aim is for the Maho Bay platform to get its 28nm Nvidia chips and continue the good transition of Optimus graphics. The possible launch timeframe is going to be set by Intel, and we hear it will happen either in March or April of 2012.

The production of mobile chips starts in December at the latest, which means that these chips have been taped out for a while now. However, 28nm is currently not doing as great as some companies would make you think, as the yields are not good.
