Amazon to take over Palm?

VentureBeat received word that HP is currently looking to rid itself of Palm as soon as possible and that among a couple of contenders, Amazon is closest to acquiring the assets.

The Kindle Fire is powered by Android, but it�s been heavily customized by Amazon to the point where you can barely tell. By purchasing the remnants of Palm, Amazon would have free rein to redesign webOS to its own liking, and it would be able to further differentiate its Kindle devices from the slew of Android tablets in the market.

And even though HP has given up entirely on its webOS hardware business after the TouchPad tablet failed spectacularly, there�s still plenty of potential for webOS to power a successful device. Palm�s mobile software was praised for its slick multi-tasking capabilities, which could allow future Kindle Fire tablets to juggle games, movies and media with more finesse than Android.

Amazon to reveal 10.1-inch tablet before year-end

DigiTimes writes Amazon is likely to outsource the production of its upcoming 10.1-inch tablet to Foxconn and that shipments are likely to begin before year-end. The site also heard that Quanta landed the 7-inch Kindle Fire orders because Foxconn was too busy with manufacturing Apple's iPads.

Amazon is expected to outsource the production of 10.1-inch tablet PCs to Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry), and shipments of the 10.1-inch tablets are likely to begin before year-end 2011 for holiday-season demand, according to industry sources. Foxconn declined to comment on market reports.

Foxconn has been a long-term contractor for Amazon's Kindle e-book readers, and market watchers had expected the company to also land orders for 7-inch Kindle Fire tablets.

Amazon reveals a $79 Kindle

Amazon makes eReaders cheaper than ever with the introduction of a $79 ad-supported Kindle. This new edition weighs 170g and is 18 percent smaller than the third-gen Kindle, but there's no touchscreen nor a keyboard. Additionally, the low price is only for the ad-supported version, if you want no ads you'll have to pay $109 for your Kindle.

The previous-generation Kindle has been rebranded to Kindle Keyboard, the WiFi-only version with Special Offers now starts at $99 ($139 without ads) while the 3G edition costs $139 ($189 without ads).

Another new device in Amazon's lineup is the Kindle Touch, a long-awaited touchscreen variant of the company's Kindle eReader. The Kindle Touch uses an IR touch system, it has a more advanced E Ink screen and zero buttons. The ad-supported Kindle Touch will ship for $99 ($139 without ads), while the Kindle Touch 3G with free global roaming will cost $149 ($189 without ads). Shipments will start on November 21st but just like the Kindle Fire tablet it will only be available in the US.
